S25 - Alcohol labelling in the European Union
Supporting alcohol policy through information provision
Session description
Over five per cent of all deaths in the European Union are attributable to alcohol, and almost a third of those is due to alcohol-attributable cancers. Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan sets the target of achieving a relative reduction of at least ten per cent in alcohol use by 2025, and one of the key activities in the Beating Cancer Plan is the development of proposals providing nutritional and health information on alcoholic beverages. The session discussion will focus on the current issues related to providing consumer information in the context of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. What information do consumers need? And is digital provision of information enough, or does the relevant information for the consumer have to be on the label?
